POEM: A VEGAN MANIFESTO

No animal

ever gives itself

to the hunter’s knife

or shotgun

voluntarily.

That’s horse shit;

and no less

because

a brown-skinned

elder said it.

If you crave

life’s continuation,

the deer, the cow

and the badger do.

Every creature

that walks the Earth

or rides its thermals

wants to live.

They must, then.

Let us share their home.

There’s room

and sustenance enough

to forget the bullet,

to lay down the blade,

to forego the slaughter

of the trawler net.
